as we reach the p.f.a. awards we all know the winner of both awards will be wayne rooney and rightly so he has had a great season and the only reason manchester united are still in this title race is down to him, but I am looking at the most underrated players this season the players you only miss when they are out of the team 1. scott parker: as west ham supporters breathe a little lighter over the summer and start to look at the reason why they are still playing week in week out in the premier league you see the vital three points and the crucial last minute goals and then they look at the man who for long periods this season was a one man team and is the only player who can come out from west ham's poor season with any credit. Now his name will not be on Capello's 23 man list but it should be because he has been our most consistent central midfielder this season. 2. alex song: another trophy less season, another season of false hope but if there is anything to take out of this season it's the performances of a young midfielder who has blossomed this season and has become into one of the best in his position. no not fabregas its alex song, when arsenal fans were calling for a ball winning midfield destroyer they wanted a 6ft 3 inch vieira clone but what they didnt realise was that they had that type of player already in thier first team who had broke his way into the first team during arsenal's 2009 champions league run and had carried on that form throughout this season, and if their are anything for arsenal fans to look forward to is the future and with players like song, diaby (who is another underrated player) and fabregas the future looks bright. 3. pepe reina: through a miserable season their is only one man who really can claim to have had a personally good season and that is pepe reina with the highest clean sheets the premiership and a unbelievable level of consistency, reina has become the best keeper in the premiership and maybe the world and with him signing a new 6 year contract his loyalty has turned him into a anfield hero, a great shot stopper and brilliant distribution maybe england should ask spain if we can borrow him for the summer. 4. branislav ivanovic: as chelsea top the league table and continue to score shed loads the lampards, drogbas and maloudas continue to get the plaudits there has been one player who has been impeccable all season its the serbian defender ivanovic whether he plays right back centre half or left back he continues to be impressive, strong in the tackle, great in the air and has a great reading of the game. 5. nigel de jong: man city were a laughing stock when they paid 18 million pounds for a dutch water carrier who's contract ran out in 6 months and could've been picked up for free at the end of season. but he has answered all his critics with his physical approach to the english game his best quality is his reading of the game that has helped him keep cesc fabreags, steven gerrard and frank lampard in his back pocket over the course of the season and with a world cup coming up he could be a star in this summers tournament. 6. wilson palacios: if ever there was one criticism with spurs over the years its there lack of bite in midfield with players like jenas and huddlestone trying to be midfield destroyers they lacked the bite and intelligence that the role took, but with palacios he has the defensive quality and the ability to take a lung busting surge forward that was seen when winning a penalty away at everton in the last minute or his box to box dominance that was seen against liverpool at home on the opening day of the season. and at 25 his best years are ahead of him which is good for spurs fans but not for opposition fans.
