A flag officer is a commissioned officer who is senior enough to be entitled to fly a flag to represent where he exercises command. The term usually refers to the senior officers in a nation's navy or coast guard, specifically those who hold any of the admiral ranks and in some case it applies to those holding the rank of commodore as well. However, in American English it can additionally apply to general officers in the United States Army, United States Air Force and United States Marine Corps, as those officers are permitted to fly their own flags.
