Champs' pride at clinching crown
NOTTINGHAMSHIRE were rewarded for their hard work and fortitude after they defied the odds to win the LV County Championship, claims director of cricket Mick Newell.

The Trent Bridge side finished level on 214 points with Somerset at the top of the table, winning the pennant because they claimed more wins than their rivals.

Chris Read’s side gambled on Somerset and Yorkshire not winning and decided to search for bonus points in their rain- affected match at Lancashire.

They clinched the title by virtue of a first innings score of 400 and three quick wickets to secure the required six bonus points.

Newell said: “We’ve been criticised in the last couple of weeks for bottling it, so to come up with a performance like that, I’m very, very pleased.”

Somerset captain Marcus Trescothick admitted the disappointment would linger for his team. Somerset failed to achieve the win at Durham which would have handed them a first ever title.

He said: “It’s gutting, really. It’s terrible and it’s something that will live with us for a long, long time to know we were so close - touching distance to the trophy.”
